Week 6 Learning Experiences

Week 6 Learning Experiences.

This week one of many foci was learning about the temperature. We started with an icy play provocation that inspired conversations among the children. "Hot," "cold," "freezing," "super cold" were some of the most common words. For many children the word "lukewarm" was new and Luke loved the idea of something having his name in. The children experienced once again the ocean seen, but this time it was all frozen. For some, playing with the frozen dinosaurs and animals brought the memories of their favourite movies like "Frozen" and "Ice Age." And of course we saw a clip of melting snowman from "Frozen!" Once we did enough talking, it was the time to introduce the measurement aspects of temperature. We looked at the temperatures around the world, where the children had to estimate different temperatures in Celsius through the interactive PowerPoint. Towards the end of the week we estimated and measured temperatures of tap, iced and hot water. On Friday we analyzed our daily temperature chart, with Friday lunch time reaching 25 degrees outside in the playground!

Frozen ocean...children agreed that ocean without plastic is better.

Musa was shy at first but he enjoyed this experience.

This was a great opportunity for the children to summarize their learning from this week. This playful learning with the natural resources allowed for spontaneity and curiosity which leads to more organic assimilation of the new knowledge.
