Hands On

Some of the learning experiences this week in Room 3 involved playful exploration of the problems our oceans face today. We saw a few clips on YouTube about plastics in our oceans. The children couldn't believe how a plastic straw from a birthday party could end up in turtle's nose. We introduced the concept of Planet's Superheroes and the children offered their own solutions to the problems we're facing. Next, our Superheroes were on a mission to sort out what belongs and does not belong in our oceans.

The market and 'high frequency road' continue to be a very popular play activity. This week we talked about the money in New Zealand as we attempted to add different items from the market. The children even made their own coins out of paper.

Our big book this week was called "Letter Fight." On Friday we re-enacted the story and the children made a few words by shifting the 'letter' actors.
Some things like glad wrap, plastic bottles and bubble wrap did not belong in the ocean.

The children quickly spotted trapped fish in a bubble wrap.

Introducing new words.

After a fight, the letters fell asleep 'reading' SLAP.

After they got up, and with Keira's help, they got up as PALS.

  1. What a great class activity. It is really important that our kids understand the impacts from plastic use and what alternative measures we can take to reduce our carbon footprint as well.
