The Gift of Giving

This week we've been making Christmas arts and cards. This involved cards with 3D elements and crafting mini Christmas trees. We picked up some sticks outside and used whatever we could find in the classroom. This has been exciting because some children had to overcome their fear of operating hot glue gun. Because this process had tangible effect, the students were so eager to make them. Only minor burns and no tree looked the same! Room 18 is a very creative classroom where children don't have to make identical designs and follow the same proces. They need to be guided by their own imagination, thinking, solve own problems, make mistakes and keep on going. They made one thing to keep and one or more to give...

Time Capsule-open in 2121

This week, we wrote messages to the people in future.  We wrote what 2021 was all about. It was beneficial to put all of our experiences on paper. The time capsule will be buried next week and instructed to be open in 100 years. We hope there will be no COVID but New Zealand will still have our beloved kiwis, tuis, keas and more. Later, we found a book called The Mysterious Time Capsule.  Reading it was easy, now that we have made our own.

Garage Band

After we finished our technology projects, there was a great number of recycling materials left. One of the planned activities for today was making musical shakers for a proposed Soundscape.  The students were given freedom to make their own instruments out of the leftover materials.  Soon, many interesting instruments appeared.  We had guitars, drums, string instruments, shakers and some other creations.  Someone said "let's have a garage band." And so Room 18 band was created. We didn't rehearsed at all when we performed the Believer for our online classmates over the ZOOM. It was pure fun, noise and creativity.
