This term one of our foci at school is Science. We started with engaging in the Science in a Van experience. The children observed the scientists working together on making different types of mixtures. The children learned about the different states of matter like solid, liquid and gas. Listening to the scientific language like: mixture, guess, prediction, change, same, observations, separate, frozen carbon dioxide, helium allowed the students to start developing new understandings about our world and of course to acquire new vocabulary. Later in class, we read a big book about different states of matter. The children gave many examples of what objects are solid and liquid and came up with air in the tires, gas for cooking and the air we breathe as the examples of gas. We made a volcano by mixing baking soda with the vinegar and paint. The reacting ingredients brought so much excitement and joy. Then we used what we observed in this experiment in 'bubbling art' by mixing variables together. For some of the children their pictures bubbled actively, yet for the last group not much happened. We discussed this with our new found knowledge.
