Writers' Festival Week

Celebrating children's writing efforts was what this week was all about. From looking into the history of writing to the family evening, we  engaged in multiple writing experiences.

The Incredible Wonder of Light

This week we have been exploring the natural phenomena of the light. We did some experiments exploring the light waves. The children were showed three different materials: plastic lid, baking paper and tin foil. "What will happen if I shine a torch onto the plastic lid?" I asked. The children predicted what they thought might happen. We tested the light on all three materials and the children were amazed to see how light waves behaved. The light went through the plastic clearly, it was not that strong after going through the baking paper and it could not go through tin foil. We made some plastic Rangoli patterns last week and when the sun was strong we went outside. The children formed a rather clear hypothesis based on previous experiments: sun will go through, because it's plastic. To their amazement they observed that the Rangoli patterns were projected onto the surfaces. It was so much fun for all of us. On Friday Room 3 showed our buddy class our discovery and they asked our young light experts questions about it. Just because our children are younger (teina) doesn't mean they can't be more knowledgeable (tuakana).

Being Responsible

This week we learned about being responsible for looking after our well-being during summer months. We played with the new resources we bought with the profit money we made during our school's market day. We also celebrated Diwali by learning new song, drawing Rangoli patters and listening to stories about this festival.
